What's the difference between cultural competency and cultural humility?
Cultural competency focuses on acquiring knowledge and skills to engage with different cultures, often treating cultural understanding as something that can be mastered. Cultural humility, on the other hand, is a lifelong process of self-reflection, openness, and recognizing one’s own biases and limitations. While cultural competency can sometimes lead to a sense of expertise, cultural humility acknowledges that learning is ongoing and that individuals are the experts of their own lived experiences. In therapy and professional spaces, cultural humility fosters deeper, more authentic relationships by centering respect, collaboration, and a willingness to learn and adapt.
